“The White House Reef Snorkel Trail is probably one of the most frequently visited sights on this island visited by tourists coming here,” said David Stone, deputy chairman of the TCRF. “We are very pleased with the outcome of the work completed today. The trail markers all look like they did when they were first placed around this gorgeous inshore reef.”

White House Reef Trail Marker Project

The snorkel trail, which was installed by a group of local residents and the Department of Environmental and Coastal Resources more than 10 years ago, had not been properly maintained, so most of the trail markers were virtually illegible.

The trail markers consist of a ceramic tile made by local artists on Providenciales mounted to a reef ball anchored to the sea floor. Each marker describes an important fact about coral reefs and how to protect them.

Organized by the TCRF and with the help of volunteers, scuba divers worked underwater all day Dec. 18 to remove and replace the existing trail markers. Volunteers on the beach worked hard to clean the accumulated deposits of calcium carbonate and algae on each of the snorkel trail markers.

During the work that lasted all day on Sunday, the TCRF also signed up members and explained to passing tourists what the organization had in the works for additional projects. Somewhere Café and Lounge assisted the effort and helped to promote the project. They hosted a barbecue and had life music to help attract tourists to the event.

“We want to extend a big thank you to all the staff at Somewhere Café and Lounge,” said Don Stark, chairman of the TCRF. “Without their help with logistics and with promotion, we couldn’t have completed this work as quickly and as easily as we did. We also want to thank Provo Turtle Divers who graciously supplied our scuba divers with the scuba tanks needed to complete the work.”

In addition to completing the snorkel trail restoration, the TCRF raised more than $1,000 through generous donations from people who stopped by to learn more about the work going on that day and about the TCRF.

Having enjoyed countless hours on this reef myself, the completion of this project came as wonderful news.

Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages and Spa, in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos was thrilled to host Senior Vice President of Sesame Workshop, Anita Stewart. Stewart, during her stay at the resort, participated in the Sandals Foundation’s Reading Road Trip, a volunteer literacy enhancement program available to guests visiting all Sandals and Beaches Resorts designed to help improve reading skills of children who attend some of the Sandals Foundation’s adopted schools across the Caribbean.

On Tuesday, October 18, Stewart, along with Cookie Monster, Zoe, and Beaches Resorts’ Representatives Elanor Finfin (Public Relations Manager), Lucy Contreas (Animations Manager), and Fedeline Julian (Kids Camp Manager) visited with Enid Capron Primary, one of the Foundation’s many adopted schools in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos.

More than 60 first grade students joined together with Sesame Street walkaround characters for some educational entertainment which included listening, comprehension and reading skills training from Stewart and the Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort team, all trained by the experts at Sesame Workshop. Students also enjoyed reading stories, asking interactive questions, and, of course, snacking on nutritious foods throughout the morning.  “It was wonderful seeing the children’s smiling faces and how attentive they were to the Healthy Habits stories,” said Stewart.

Dress Code

Gustavo Simons Martinez has earned the highest and most respected professional rating in recreational scuba diving, becoming the first resident PADI Course Director in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Simons, whose grandmother is from Salt Cay, is also the first islander by descendant and Dominican to obtain the Course Director certification from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), the world’s largest recreational diving membership and diver training organization.

“Becoming a PADI Course Director places me in a very strategic position to promote and increase enrollments in PADI Instructor Courses here in the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Simons said. “One of the benefits for tourism is that persons who wish to become diver instructors could travel to the TCI for certification.”

“Attaining the PADI Course Director certification allows me to instruct a wide variety of PADI Pro Level Courses and would give the Turks and Caicos Islands an edge in promoting, increasing and conducting more PADI Instructor Development Courses.”

Simons, now 37, has been a PADI member for 18 years, but it all started when he was a child.

“As a very young lad growing up in the Dominican Republic, I was always fascinated with swimming and water sports activities,” he said. “One day on an invite from friends, I visited a dive center. I was captivated by the underwater environment.”

“Hard work, perseverance, personal sacrifices and networking with the professional team of PADI staff, were vital to my professional success with PADI,” he said.

Simons has led initiatives like Project Aware Coral Watch and has organized shoreline and underwater beach clean-up campaigns. He also is a member of the TCI Environment Club and the TCI Red Cross as a first responder.

Working with the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources, Simons has been trained to capture the invasive lionfish and helps control them on the Reef Ball artificial reefs off Beaches in the Princess Alexander National Park.

“I strive to conduct high quality training to produce the best professional divers and dive instructors at PADI’s standards,” said Simons, who has worked at Beaches for almost five years. “With the growth in tourism and the ensuing interest in scuba diving, many dive enthusiasts want to take up diving as a career.

“My goal is to increase the number of local dive instructor. I trust that my presence and achievement would inspire other divers and dive instructors to continue to pursue their diving career.”
